Rory MacDonald wins UFC on Fox 8 snooze fest over Jake Ellenberger

The co-main event at UFC on Fox 8 was supposed to be a chance for the next welterweight contender to make a statement. The bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger figured to be an exciting bout between the two most likely men to fight for the welterweight belt after champion Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks fight. Instead, MacDonald won a decision in a snooze fest.

MacDonald established a jab early in the fight, and continued to use it throughout the bout. He didn't come up with big moves that could finish the fight, though. Instead, he was content to rely on the jab again and again.

Ellenberger played the fight even more cautiously than MacDonald. He couldn't find a way to avoid MacDonald's jab and set up a strike or a takedown. The Division II wrestling All-American couldn't get a takedown until late in the third round. This fight was his big opportunity to get to the championship shot, but his cautiousness kept him from getting the win.

The crowd was unrelenting in their boos, and even UFC president Dana White was disappointed.

"I obviously look to finish fights, but he?s a good fighter, so what can you do? I think I had him worried with the elbows because he didn?t want to come near me after that. That wasn?t my game plan, but I accomplished what I needed to do," MacDonald said after the fight.

Though MacDonald got the win, there is no guarantee he will get a title shot any time soon after that performance. He trains with St-Pierre, and appeared to learn from his safe, but not exciting, approach. At 15-1, he has the resume for a title shot. But will the UFC want to feature him if this is the fight fans remember?

Catholics hear pope's call to shake up church

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- In the thick of his historic visit to Brazil this week, Pope Francis urged young Catholics to make a "mess" in their dioceses and break out of their spiritual cages.

Francis' exhortation, spoken Thursday during a special meeting with Argentine faithful, won him acclaim as a renegade leader of the world's biggest church. But it also left many of his followers with their own interpretations of the pontiff's words about the need to shake up the church.

Some said they thought Francis wanted them to object more forcefully when taught modern ideas that clash with church doctrine. Others said it meant hitting the streets and pushing for social change.

"If in my biology class they speak about abortion, I should raise my hand and say I don't believe in that," said Maria Alejandrina de Dicindio, a 54-year-old Argentine catechism teacher who had traveled to Rio to see her pope, a fellow Argentine. "The youth should open their mouths when it's their turn."

For Mexican pilgrim Gilberto Amado Hernandez, the pope's message meant he should start showing off to the world Jesus Christ's message of love.

"It's difficult to meet young people who want to get close to Christ," Amado said. "We have to show them that faith is something beautiful."

Francis himself didn't specify what to do, but he has displayed his own mold-breaking ways throughout this week's visit to Rio de Janeiro and rural Sao Paulo state, his first overseas trip as pope.

The first pontiff from the Americas worried security officials by riding through massive crowds atop an open-sided popemobile rather than the fully enclosed, bulletproof vehicle his last two predecessors used. He's also ventured straight up to well-wishers to kiss babies and bless children and met privately Friday with juvenile offenders to provide counsel.

While speaking to his fellow Argentines Thursday, Francis said Catholics should make a concerted effort to get outside their own worlds.

"I want to see the church get closer to the people," he told them. "I want to get rid of clericalism, the mundane, this closing ourselves off within ourselves, in our parishes, schools or structures, because these need to get out."

His final message: "Don't forget: make trouble."

In his own way, he lived those words as the archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, before being selected as pope in March.

Then known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the future pope largely abandoned the kinds of luxuries favored by other high-ranking church officials. He rented out the archbishop's luxurious suburban mansion, living instead in a spartan room in a downtown church office building. He also rode subways and buses around town rather than keep a chauffeur.

Francis' visit to a Rio slum on Thursday wasn't his first such venture. He made regular unescorted trips to dangerous slums as archbishop and saw to it that every major "misery village" in Buenos Aires had a chapel and a priest to spread the Lord's word.

He also encouraged young people and the laity to take on leadership roles in parishes that were previously held by priests, so that church members would have much more say in what happens in their communities. Though the Catholic Church openly supported Argentina's 1976-1983 dictatorship, Francis later approved sainthood investigations for priests who were killed by the military government.

Yet pope biographer Sergio Rubin said Francis the archbishop also had a very keen sense of politics and took care to act prudently, choosing his battles and avoiding challenging superiors in ways that would backfire.

He wasn't so gleeful and devoted to the crowd, seemingly mindful that he didn't yet have the power to make a big splash in the church, according to an Argentine Catholic official who asked not to be identified because he wasn't authorized to talk publicly about church politics.

Instead, Francis molded the church in Argentina in quieter ways by hiring and promoting a new generation of outgoing priests in his own model, and not only fellow Jesuits used to living among lay people.

His replacement as archbishop, Mario Poli, had impressed Bergoglio by earning a degree in social work from the public University of Buenos Aires. In a book of dialogues with a friendly rabbi, Francis said, "This is a much better situation, because in the (university) you become acquainted with real life, the different points of view there are about it, the different scientific aspects, cosmopolitanism. . It's a way of having your feet well planted in the earth."

The shake-up message is also one he's applying as pope to the Vatican's staid and dysfunctional bureaucracy. Francis has made clear that big change is on the way, naming commissions of inquiry to investigate the scandals at the Vatican bank and propose an overarching reform of the entire central governance of the Catholic Church.

The pontiff has dived into the crowds that have greeted him at the Vatican and in Brazil.

During two raucous rides down Copacabana beach, he's waved, smiled and stopped repeatedly to accept gifts thrown at him from the crowd. At one point, Francis gave away his own white skullcap and put on another one tossed in from the street.

For Argentine student Ana Paula Garrote, Francis was showing Catholics they needed to live that type of spirit.

"For me, the pope wanted to say that we should go out into the streets, not stay in the parishes, and not be ashamed of talking about God," Garrote said. "The pope is telling us to talk about God without impunity because we have the truth, in uppercase, and we aren't alone."

Business Owners, Meet Your New Graduates | DemGen Inc. - Virtual ...

After graduation, students should be elated to be done school, but the search for a new job can cause even more panic attacks than your last final. You may have finally received that coveted diploma, but the real test has only just begun.

If you?re a recent graduate looking for a new position, or a business owner looking for a new partner, these suggestions will make the hiring process a little easier.

1.??? Interviews are key.

For Business Owners:? It doesn?t matter if you?ve found someone with the most impressive resume in the world, meeting someone for an interview is extremely important. Asking questions about past project, school involvement, and future aspirations with the company will help you understand their overall personality and work ethic. If they engage you in conversation and show a willingness to learn about the company ? you know you?ve found a good candidate.

For Recent Graduates: Go on as many interviews as possible. Even if you?re not 100 per cent qualified for the position, going to multiple interviews will strengthen your comfort in tense situations. You may not land your first job interview, so it?s important to keep going. Engage in conversation with your interviewer, bring an extra copy of your resume (and portfolio pieces if necessary) and make sure they get to know you.

2.??? Lose any pretence of attitude.

For Business Owners: Remember: you still need to sell your business. You?re not the only company that?s hiring, and you won?t be doing anyone a favour if you make them feel as though they?d be lucky to work for you. The reason you?re hiring graduates is to add new talent, and you might end up losing them if you belittle their benefits to the company.

For Recent Graduates: Please remember that you are not the only person with a new diploma. You may have graduated top of your class and acquired some great references, but you?re still new, and there might be someone with more experience and a similar diploma sitting in the waiting room with you. You want to build a relationship, and a bad attitude won?t help with that.

3.??? Get over any procrastination tendencies, and fear of group work.

For Business Owners: Never procrastinate when it comes to hiring. Don?t hire someone when you need him or her to start immediately. It?s better to hire someone during a slow period, so you have time to train them and introduce them to the company. When you are conducting interviews, bring someone else with you. They might pick up something you missed.

For Recent Graduates: If you haven?t already figured out how to beat procrastination, do it now, and quickly. Chances are you won?t stick around very long if you can?t keep on top of your assigned work. And remember how much you despise group work because of that one person who doesn?t pull their weight? Well, it?s time to shake that feeling and jump in headfirst. You?re in a new place with new people, and showing your boss that you?re eager to work as a team is a great way to start building relationships.

Kids Who Grow Up Using iPads Have Restricted ... - Business Insider

tablet

Oli Scarff/Getty Images

The iPad generation will learn fewer words, experts fear, as using text messages, emails and computers to learn could be stunting children?s vocabulary.

Our brains are hardwired to learn new words when we hear others use them in conversation. But as children increasingly learn through devices instead of listening to others they do not get the opportunity to hear a wide range of words.

Therefore experts believed that the oral tradition of passing on knowledge is being eroded, and all generations spend too long staring at their screens.

Marco Catani, of the Institute of Psychiatry, King?s College London, told the Daily Mail that increasingly people do not have time to communicate and children turn to the internet, iPhones, mobile phones and tablet computers to which they all have access to.

"These are visual rather than auditory, so it is likely that they will end up with a lower average number of words than previous generations,? he said.

Over reliance on computers has previously been blamed for shorter attention spans and making children increasingly self-centered.

In a study, 27 volunteers had their brains scanned as they learned made-up words, and it was found that hearing and verbally imitating speech was the key to understanding.

Dr Catani explained that when learning new vocabulary you start by hearing it then repeat it until you get it right, and therefore increase your vocabulary and by the time a person reaches adulthood they know around 30,000 words.

One area of the brain, the arcuate fasciculus, is key to this process.

It is a bundle of nerve fibres which links two regions of the brain which are tied to language ? one that hears and decodes sounds, and one that moves the mouth to form speech. Those with a stronger arcuate fasciculus found it easier to learn new words, the scans showed.

Once familiar, words are stored in other parts of the brain, according to the study reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Catani said: ?Now we understand that this is how we learn new words, our concern is that children learn new words, our concern is that children will have less vocabulary, as much of their interaction is through text, email and screen.

"This research reinforces the need for us to maintain the oral tradition of talking to our children.?

Former NFL Players Are Turning to Digital Startups

Mike Wahle

When injuries permanently sidelined National Football League offensive guard Mike Wahle a few years ago, like all retiring pro athletes, he had to ask himself, ?What?s next?? And while some guys might have rested on their laurels, the 6-foot-6-inch former all-pro got a master?s degree from London Business School before dedicating himself to founding a social platform called Crowd Cam, which will go live before the upcoming football season.

While former athletes have always looked to television and radio for second careers, Wahle represents a growing breed of ex-NFLers taking aim at digital media. Wahle?s Crowd Cam offers athletes, coaches and teams free profile pages that aggregate their content from social nets such as Twitter and Instagram while giving obsessed fans a single stop to keep tabs on the musings of their sports favorites.

?The best thing about sports is storylines,? Wahle said. ?Every week of an NFL season is like a chapter in a book. We?ve created an environment where people can both interact during the lead-up to the games as well as their aftermath.?

Seventy-five athletes have committed to using the platform as well as a handful of college football coaches, he said, adding that ?98 percent of their profile page will be created for them through the aggregation system, and from there they sprinkle in their own text or video content.? Like many digital hopefuls, Wahle?s business model leans on advertising. So he?s teamed with ad-world players, and they are finalizing what Crowd Cam?s paid promos will be. Think BuzzFeed-like integrations and sponsor takeovers for profile pages.

?There will be opportunities for brands that are interested in content marketing, native advertising and using video to insert themselves into different fan streams,? Wahle said.

Another notable NFL retiree attempting to tackle interactive media is Tiki Barber with his year-old Thuzio, an online service that lets consumers book lunches and appearances with famous athletes. And pro football veteran Tony Gonzalez seems to have a digital career on his mind even though he has two years left on his playing contract, launching an exercise mobile app with tech company FitStar.

And then there?s Tony Mandarich, who is best known as an overhyped draft pick in 1989. He launched a Web marketing service in 2005 that he says is growing annually by 50 percent in recent years.

?My advice to those guys just starting out is to be ready for constant change,? Mandarich said. ?The changes don?t happen every quarter?they occur every month. You have to stay up to speed or get left behind.?

And with more pro athletes who grew up with digital set to retire in the next several years, the competition among former ballplayers will likely intensify.

?There?s only so many broadcasting gigs for former athletes,? said Bob Dorfman, a creative director for Baker Street Advertising and a sports marketing analyst. ?So it makes sense to go where the jobs, the money, the fan base and marketing opportunities exist. And that?s in digital these days.?

Israel's deepest well targets 1.5B barrels of crude

(Bloomberg Businessweek) The deepest oil well drilled in Israel?s 65-year history may be the most important.

Houston?s Noble Energy Inc. (NBL:US) will probe 6,500 meters (4 miles) below the Mediterranean seabed later this year, targeting as much as 1.5 billion barrels of crude, equal to about 15 years of Israeli demand.

While explorers have found enough natural gas in the past five years to turn Israel into an exporter, a major oil discovery would break new ground. The Middle East?s third-largest economy spends about $10 billion a year importing 98 percent of the oil it uses. Domestic production would increase tax revenue, boost the country?s balance of payments and reduce vulnerability to supply disruptions.

BP Veteran Browne Builds US Gulf Oil Acreage

Reuters reports that former BP chief executive John Browne is to preside over the biggest set of oil and gas assets in the shallower, mature section of the Gulf of Mexico after buying them from U.S.-based Apache Corp (APA.N).

Private equity firm Riverstone Holdings LLC, where Browne is a partner, is to pay Apache $3.75 billion for its continental shelf assets, Houston-based Apache announced on Thursday.

The area covering 1.9 million net acres and 500 blocks will be held through a Riverstone portfolio company, Fieldwood Energy LLC, Riverstone said in its own statement.

Browne ran BP from 1995 to 2007 through an era when it built a position as one of the most important players in the Gulf, especially in the deeper water, where it still is a big player. He was replaced by Tony Hayward - who became the public face of the company's 2010 oil spill. Hayward has also since left the British company, which is now embroiled in costly litigation over the spill.

The assets sold by Apache ended 2012 with estimated proved reserves of 133 million barrels of oil and natural gas liquids and 636 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The fields produced around 50,000 barrels of oil and liquids and 254 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Apache is keeping a 50 percent stake in the unexplored portions of the properties.

Scarborough Battles GOP Rep. King Over U.S. ?Military Adventurism?: ?It?s Not Our Job To Be World Policemen!?

This morning on Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough confronted Rep. Peter King (R-NY) over American ?military adventurism? and the Republican Party?s expansive foreign policy decisions of the past decade.

The heated exchange came shortly after Rep. King expressed his contempt for the ?isolationist? foreign policy views of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a current frontrunner for candidacy in the 2016 GOP primary field. Scarborough took umbrage at the congressman?s outright dismissal of Sen. Paul?s foreign policy concerns, and so he grilled him on whether a full decade of warfare costing several trillion dollars and thousands of lives has been worth it.

?You do believe, do you not, that the Republican Party?s foreign policy has been too expansive over the past decade,? the host asked King, ?We even, dare I say as a country, engage in military adventurism that has not put the United States first.? How long, Scarborough asked, before it?s okay to remove troops from the embattled country?

?If we pull out of Afghanistan, how are we different from September 10th, 2001?? King replied. ?There?s going to be a vacuum. There?s going to be the Taliban, al Qaeda, also the Pakistan Taliban. We?re talking about Islamist terrorists who are poised to come at us. So we just can?t walk back and say we?re out of Afghanistan.?

?How are we different after we pull out of Afghanistan than we were on September 10th? Osama bin Laden is dead. Al Qaeda has been decimated,? the MSNBC host shot back. King responded that al Qaeda is ?right across the border? in Pakistan, prompting Scarborough to assert that the terror network is anything but centralized.

King then accused the host of engaging in ?the type of exaggerated debate that does not help us,? which ultimately led to the two taking a heated tone with one another. ?We?ve been in Afghanistan since 2001, there are people dying in Afghanistan this week that were 5, 6, 7 years old when the war started, Peter,? Scarborough said, his voice rising. ?It is not our job to be the world?s policeman and to be there for the next 20 years!?

?It is our job to protect the United States,? King pushed back. ?If we arbitrarily withdraw from Afghanistan, we leave ourselves open for another attack.?

Moody's raises US outlook to 'stable' from 'negative'

markets

Moody's Investors Service on Thursday raised the U.S. sovereign outlook to stable from negative and affirmed the country's triple-A rating, citing steady growth despite reduced government spending.

The rating agency's move eased the threat of a cut to the world's biggest economy.

Moody's said the federal government's debt trajectory is on track with criteria the rating agency previously laid out, even without further budget measures from Washington.

The economy is growing moderately, but it is still "progressing at a faster rate compared with several Aaa peers and has demonstrated a degree of resilience to major reductions in the growth of government spending," Moody's said in a statement.

The U.S. budget outlook has brightened in recent months, alleviating some of the pressure on policymakers for more fiscal compromises.

On May 14, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said the U.S. federal budget deficit is shrinking at a faster pace than expected, and forecast this fiscal year would end with the smallest shortfall since 2008.

"We feel that we have enough information on the debt trajectory at this point to make a conclusion even without information on any possible further actions in Washington," said Steven Hess, Moody's lead U.S. sovereign credit analyst.

Even the possibility of further debate on raising the U.S. debt ceiling this year - allowing the government to keep borrowing money - is unlikely to hurt the rating, Hess said.

"We think that they will raise the debt ceiling, as they always have in the past," he said. "But even if there's some delay, we're not too concerned about that affecting the government's ability to service its debt."

Analysts said the affirmation means the U.S. sovereign rating could be safer now for years to come.

"We are still running sizable deficits but they are not getting worse," said Guy LeBas, chief fixed-income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia.

"Barring a nuclear event or the re-emergence of the debt ceiling problem, this drastically reduces the chance of a U.S. downgrade in the next couple of years," he added.

Last month Fitch also affirmed the U.S. sovereign AAA rating. But that agency kept a negative outlook, saying still-elevated debt levels leave the country vulnerable to shocks without more deficit reduction.

Standard & Poor's rates the country AA-plus, with a stable outlook. S&P cut the rating in August 2011 after a bruising round of debt ceiling debates in Washington raised fears of political dysfunction.

In addition, Moody's affirmed the Aaa senior ratings of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Federal Home Loan Banks and the Federal Farm Credit Banks, which the agency considers to be directly linked to the rating of the U.S. government.

While the stable outlook means the agency is unlikely to cut the U.S. sovereign rating in the medium term, Moody's noted that could change in the future.

"Without further fiscal consolidation efforts, government deficits are anticipated to increase once again over the longer term," the Moody's statement said.

The outlook covers the next couple years or so, Hess said. After that, he added, "a triple-A rating is not guaranteed forever."

Disagreement stalls plan for train between Vegas, California

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Obama administration is suspending its review of a $5.5 billion loan request that is part of a proposal to build a bullet train between Southern California and Las Vegas.

A snag has developed over where equipment to build and run the 150 mph train would be manufactured.

A June 28 U.S. Department of Transportation letter to developer XpressWest says loan recipients must buy steel, iron and other goods produced in the U.S.

But the letter says XPressWest's proposal does not meet those rules and says the project faces other uncertainties. The agency released a copy of the letter Tuesday.

XpressWest is counting on the loan to fund most of the cost of building the train from the high desert town of Victorville to the Las Vegas Strip.

Mandela 'steadily improving' on 95th birthday

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa celebrated Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday on Thursday, a milestone capped by news that the former president's health was improving after fears that he was close to death during ongoing hospital treatment.

Schools around the country honored the anti-apartheid leader in morning assemblies, and numerous groups have asked people to volunteer 67 minutes to charity to match what they say are the 67 years that Mandela served his community.

The United Nations has declared the day Nelson Mandela International Day as a way of recognizing the Nobel Peace Prize winner's contribution to reconciliation. Mandela, also known by his clan name Madiba, was jailed for 27 years under white minority rule and led a difficult transition from apartheid to democracy, becoming president in all-race elections in 1994.

"Madiba remains in hospital in Pretoria but his doctors have confirmed that his health is steadily improving," said a statement released by the office of President Jacob Zuma.

"We are proud to call this international icon our own as South Africans and wish him good health," Zuma said in the statement. He thanked South Africans for supporting Mandela during his hospitalization with "undying love and compassion" and responding to a call to give the beloved figure "the biggest birthday celebration ever this year."

Mandela was taken to a hospital on June 8 for treatment for a recurring lung infection. In previous announcements, the government said he was in critical but stable condition. Court documents filed by Mandela's family earlier this month had said Mandela was on life support and near death.

But on the eve of Mandela's birthday, one of his daughters, Zindzi, said in an interview with Britain's Sky TV that her father was gaining strength and may be going home "anytime soon."

You Can Play Your Xbox One Disc-Based Games While They're ...

Update: The same applies for games purchased digitally, so that?s great news. Original Story: Microsoft has told Polygon that gamers will be able to play their Xbox One disc-based games while they?re still being installed in the background.

This isn?t a big feature at all, as I?d expect that to be the case with any next-gen system. PS4 does the same thing, but unlike Sony, Microsoft hasn?t confirmed if the same applies to digitally-purchased titles, where, on PS4, games can be played while they?re being downloaded on the console?s hard drive. hopefully we?ll get confirmation soon.
